Things To Know

Te Ara Moana is based in Titahi Bay, on the edge of Porirua Harbour, New Zealand.

We offer water activities, with a particular emphasis on water safety and social and personal responsibility. Our goal is to help improve the problem we have in NZ with drownings and water-related injuries and improve mental health outcomes for young people.

We teach school students, so when they are old enough to own boats they will have developed some wisdom around water.

We don't charge participants, courses are funded by our generous sponsors and donors.

We use a teaching methodology called TPSR (Teaching Physical and Social Responsibility). This method uses physical education to teach life skills.  We couple this with traditional Māori values demonstrating respect, generosity and care for ourselves, the environment, belongings and the kaupapa principles.

The students have fun, and we challenge them too. We hope they will go on with challenging sports and activities with a great set of abilities and behaviours to help them.

That's because we want a vibrant and active community.
